Like most people, I see Beyonce as a queen and a goddess. Her music is very empowering and motivates me to take over the world and show everyone that I can be the baddest bee out there. I believe that Queen Bey's music sends out a positive influence on her listeners (especially me because she's FREAKIN BEYONCE), but one song I didn't expect to change my life so suddenly was "Single Ladies."
Before I get way ahead of myself, let me make a note that this article is not about Beyonce (please don't hate me). The only reason that I am even mentioning her majesty is because my boyfriend ACTUALLY PUT A RING ON IT. I'd like to say that he really took her advice because I'm extremely happy that he did and anything good that happens, I like to say Beyonce was the motivation. The even more crazy thing about me being engaged is that I am a sophomore in college.
I know what you're thinking. "She's crazy to be engaged so soon!" I even told myself that I would never marry in my entire life, and if I do, it would be years after I start my career as a journalist. However, when the moment happened on Valentine's Day (corny, but romantic and memorable), I didn't have to think twice. I knew that saying yes was the best decision. Not only is he my boyfriend and fiance, but he's also my best friend.
Sure, I'm young and engaged. I sometimes have to deal with people constantly reminding me that I'm young and in college. That I'm inexperienced and not financially stable. Coming from a Dominican family, there are a lot of expectations. However, I believe that if I am old enough to pay for some bills, vote, work, and make important decisions on my own, I can decide whether or not I am ready to get married. I see a lot of people who are afraid to tell their own parents that they have found someone that they want to spend the rest of their lives with. I guess it's safe to say that I have been blessed to have a family that listens to what I have to say and respects my choices. I know that whatever I decide to do, no matter if they don't agree with my beliefs, I know that they would support my decisions like they taught me to respect others. And I guess it's also safe to say that if it weren't for Beyonce, I probably wouldn't have the courage to speak up and express myself.
In this day in age, I believe that everyone should not have to be afraid to speak up. With Donald Trump being president and the many ongoing protests, more people are starting to voice how they feel, it is important for everyone to set their limits and share what they are feeling. I feel like I've set mine after I got engaged. We are living in a time where our voices must be heard. What better way to do that than by being influenced by Beyonce herself. If anyone decides that you aren't worthy enough to be heard, than make like Queen Bey and tell em...
